INTRODUCTION 5- AND 6- NUMBERS

Till now you have learnt up to 4-digit numbers. We will learn about 5- and 6- digit numbers.

5- digit numbers
you know that

9+1

 Greatest 1-digit +1= smallest 2-digit number

99+1

Greatest 2-digit +1= smallest 3-digit number

999+1

Greatest 3-digit +1= smallest 4-digit number

Following the above pattern, can you tell what number you will get if you add 1 the greatest 4- digit number?

We have, 9999+1 =10000
10000 read as ' Ten Thousand'

10 Thousand = 1 ten thousand ➝ 10000

Let us see some example on Abacus

    6        3       7        4       2

   4       3       6        2      7

10000 is ten thousand = ten thousand

20000 is ten thousand = twenty thousand

30000 is ten thousand = thirty thousand

40000 is ten thousand = forty thousand

50000 is ten thousand = fifty thousand

60000 is ten thousand = sixty thousand

70000 is ten thousand = seventy thousand

80000 is ten thousand=  eighty thousand

90000 is ten thousand = ninety thousand

Forming 5- digit numbers

On adding 1 to the smallest 5- digit number, 10000, we get 10000+1 =10002 (Ten thousand two),.....,99998 + 1= 99999 (ninety- nine thousand nine hundred ninety - nine),...,

99999 is the greatest 5- digit number.
if we add 1 to this number, we get 99999+1=100000
100000 is read as 100 thousands or 1 lakh . this number has 6 digit. it is smallest 6-digit number.

Periods:-

A number is split into groups called periods.
For a 5-digit number, the first three places from the right make the ones period and the next two make the thousand periods. We separate the periods using commas or leave a short space.

THUS, the number 16842 can be written as 16,842 or 16 842.

💭 Ones period :-- Ones, Tens, Hundreds.
💭Thousands period:-- Thousands, Ten Thousand.

While reading a numeral, all the digits in the same period are read together and the name of period (except the ones) is read with the digits.

T

Ten thousand

Thousand

Hundreds

     Tens

  Ones

   6

    5

      9

       7

    6

We have 65,976= sixty -five thousand nine hundred seventy six.

6- Digit Numbers:-

To write the smallest 6- digit number , 1 lakh or 100000 using commas, we proceed as under:-

starting from the right , we put a commas after three digits and then another comma after the fifth digit.

1,00,000
Step 1:- put a comma after 3 digits from the right.
Step 2:- Then put a comma after the fifth digit.

We represent the smallest 6- digit number in the place value chart as shown below:-

Lakhs

Thousand

           Ones

Hundred

thousands

Ten Thousands

Thousands

Hundreds

 Tens

  Ones

1

 0

1 is in the hundred thousands place or lakhs place. So, 1,00,000 is read as 1Lakh.

Counting in Lakhs

1,00,000 = One lakh

2,00,000= Two lakh

3,00,000 = Three lakh

4,00,000 = Four lakh

5,00,000 = Five lakh

6,00,000 = Six lakh

7,00,000 = Seven lakh

8,00,000 = Eight lakh

9,00,000 = Nine lakh

Forming 6- digit Number :-
Like 5- digit number, 6- digit number can also be formed by adding 1 to the number. For Example 100000+1 =100001(One lakh one ), 100000+1 =100002 (One lakh two),.....,999998 + 1= 999999 (Nine lakh ninety-nine thousand nine hundred ninety - nine),...,999999 is the greatest 6- digit number.

PERIODS:-
In a 6-digit number, the first three places from the right make the ones period, the next two makes the thousand period and the next, that is , the sixth place, makes the lakh period. we may put the comma between different periods or leave the space between them .
             6            6            5         4          3           2

Thus it can be written as,
6,65, 432  or 6 65 432

We read it as 'Six lakh sixty- five thousand four hundred thirty two'
